Working at Height Conference Press Release
' “Conference has expert advice on working more safely at height” was featured in June’s edition of KM Kent Business, Page 33.
The event which was hosted on Monday 12 June at Priestfield Stadium by Fsb members; SME Training and Consultants Ltd, had been organised to raise awareness predominantly for Kent-based Construction companies, in line with the HSE’s ‘national awareness programme on ‘Falls’ opened by Lord Hunt (Minister responsible for Health & Safety) at the Access Industry Forum at the NEC Birmingham on 10 May 2006.
The day kick started with a chilling video presentation documenting the real life experiences victims and families affected by falls from height within the Construction Industry; grabbing the attention of the event’s 50 attendees. Kim Woodward who is a Carpentry & Joinery Lecturer at Bexley College was one of the attendees and had this comment to make…
“The day proved to be direct and to the point with expert advice and guidance on hand from real Health & Safety practitioners who are directly involved in Construction”.
Ian Whittingham MBE, was a former ‘Roofer’ by trade, now confined to a wheelchair since 1993 after suffering a fall at work from height. Ian gave a superb personal address to the conference on how his accident has affected his life; highlighting the simple yet life changing precautions that should be taken to reduce the growing number of fatalities and serious injuries within the work place. Ian stated;
“Women do not tend to compromise when it comes to safety, if it looks unsafe they won’t attempt to work. However, because the industry is male-dominated the fatality and serious injury rate is mainly amongst men. They generally just want to get the job done and unfortunately in the Construction industry that can so easily be the difference between life and death”.
The event held the support of Business Link (Kent), CITB-ConstructionSkills, the Health & Safety Executive and Medway Council; each on hand to provide expert advice and guidance throughout the day.
Joanne Taylor, Senior Consultant for SME Training and Consultants Ltd added,
“We decided to host the event to raise awareness as it is such an important issue; especially within the Construction Industry. We are extremely pleased and encouraged by the level of local support shown by the companies and individuals who attended and would like to thank them all for making the day possible”.
Following the success of the Conference, SME will be running a series of similar events covering further issues of equal importance including: the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 and the new Construction and Design Management Regulations 2006.
